Things to do

Beyond the garden wall, the landscape around Pontremoli opens into the Apennines and towards the coast. Walk through the hills, follow the clear waters of the Stretti di Giaredo, play tennis or golf, or set out towards the villages and towns of Lunigiana. Further afield, the Carrara marble quarries, the Ligurian coast and the cities of Lucca, Pisa and Florence all lie within reach. There is much to see and much to do, each place offering a different way into the landscape.

01

In the heart of Pontremoli

Pontremoli begins just beyond the garden – its old streets, the prehistoric figures of the Museo delle Statue Stele, pasticcerie opening their doors in the morning, and testaroli to be tasted where they belong.

02

On the Green & Court

Golf and tennis take you into the surrounding hills – time on the green, a game on the court, and long afternoons outdoors.

03

The Carrara marble quarries

Up into the Apuan Alps, where marble has been cut from the mountain for centuries. The quarries that gave Michelangelo his stone – vast white walls, worked into the rock, where dust and light meet.

04

Around the area

The coast is close – Forte dei Marmi and the Cinque Terre are around thirty minutes away, Portofino about an hour. Lucca and Pisa are within an hour, while Florence is two hours away. Days by the sea, afternoons in the city, and places worth taking the time to reach.

05

Into the gorge

A narrow canyon carved into the rock, with walls of coloured stone rising above clear water. The gorge winds upstream through the Apuan landscape, with stretches to be followed on foot and in the water.

06

Up into the Apennines

Paths lead up Monte Orsaro towards Lago Santo, through open mountain landscapes where horses graze along the way. A walk to take slowly, from an easy hour to a longer ascent.
